Question Mark (Polygonia Interrogationis)
Well, happy Fathers Day to all of you in the U.S. and anywhere else it may be celebrated. I ran into a Question Mark butterfly today and inexplicably it was not afraid of me. At all. Oddly enough, it was also using its sucker to taste the rusty bannister on a bridge.
I had to look it up. These butterflies get their name from a very distinct silver marking on the underside of their hindwing, which is shaped like a question mark. See the middle image with its wings folded, there is a clear “?” sign laying sideways.
The butterfly may have been sucking on rusty rail and showing off its colors, but was not completely aloof, because it vanished in split second as soon as a giant banded dragonfly showed up, attacked and thankfully missed…
